The State of AI Search in India 2026: Who Owns the Query Now?

What’s the market share of AI search in India? Google runs about 97% of India’s search engine market. Yet 60% of Indians now start at least one search a day with an AI assistant.

Both numbers are true, and together they explain why Indian brands built for Google alone are losing ground they can’t see on any dashboard.

India is OpenAI’s second-largest market, with 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, and urban India took to AI search faster than almost anywhere on earth. Yet traditional share data still shows Google untouched, so most teams here think nothing has changed.

AI Search in India – Key Takeaways

  • Google still holds about 97% of India’s search engine market (StatCounter, 2026).
  • 89% of urban Indians now use AI assistants to search, and 60% start a daily search with one (YouGov, 2026).
  • Classical share data ignores AI search, so the shift stays invisible on standard dashboards.
  • Being cited by AI now drives discoverability in India as much as ranking on Google.

AI Search in India – Who owns search in India in 2026?

In 2026, Google controls roughly 97% of India’s search engine market, its highest share in any major economy (StatCounter, 2026). Bing sits under 2%. On mobile, where most Indians search, that share passes 95%.

That makes India the closest thing Google has to a monopoly market. Phones ship with Google set as the default, and few Indians switch, so its lead grows every year.

Read only this data and you’d call India’s market settled. It isn’t. StatCounter counts search-engine page views, not questions typed into ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity. India’s 97% sits far above Google’s 90% global average, yet it ignores the AI assistants millions of Indians now query first, which makes the market look steadier than it is.

AI Search in India – How fast is AI search growing in India?

In 2026, 89% of urban Indians use AI assistants when they search, and 60% begin at least one new search each day with one, per YouGov’s report How AI Is Changing Online Discovery (YouGov, 2026), a nationally representative survey of 1,004 urban Indian adults. That makes India one of the world’s most AI-forward search markets, and one of the fastest-growing.

Nearly half of Indian searchers, 49%, use AI to get a direct answer, and 44% use it to check what they found elsewhere. For the urban majority, this is now a daily habit.

The usage numbers back the survey. India is OpenAI’s second-largest market at 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, its largest in Asia (Sam Altman via TechCrunch, February 2026).

Most India dashboards miss one thing: adoption ran ahead of money. Indians reached world-leading AI search usage while sitting mostly on free tiers. The habit is daily. Whether it turns into revenue is a slower question.

AI Search in India – Is Google losing India?

Not yet, and that’s the trap. In 2026, Google keeps about 97% of India’s search engine share (StatCounter). AI-native engines like ChatGPT Search and Perplexity barely register in that tracked share, each estimated under 0.1% and largely invisible to the analytics panels that measure it. By those numbers, Google looks safe.

In practice, Indians behave otherwise. When 60% of them open an AI assistant before Google for a daily question, Google wins fewer of those first queries even as its “search engine” share holds.

India’s search fragmented across AI assistants, Google, marketplaces, and maps by task. For Indian brands, the lesson stings: ranking first on Google no longer means buyers find you. If the AI answer that opens the journey doesn’t name you, few reach your ranking underneath it.

What AI search means for SEO in India

In 2026, 93% of Google AI Mode searches end without a click to any website (Semrush, September 2025), and AI Overviews answer most informational queries in place. For Indian SEO, that turns rankings into raw material for an answer the user reads without visiting your site.

The job changes shape. Old SEO won the click. New search wins the citation. A model reads your page, forms a view, and hands your buyer a summary. If your site doesn’t say what you do, who you serve, and where you beat the alternative, the model fills the gap with whoever wrote it down. Getting cited inside the AI answer now matters more than ranking on a page fewer users scroll.

The gap widens in the vernacular. Hindi AI Mode arrived in September 2025, and AI Overviews run across Indian languages. Few Indian brands own content the models can quote back in those languages.

The next several hundred million Indian searchers won’t work in English, and whoever publishes in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, or Marathi first gets cited first.

AI Search in India – A quick note on who’s paying

India’s AI usage runs mostly on subsidized access. OpenAI priced ChatGPT Go under $5, then made it free for a year here. Airtel gave 360 million customers a free year of Perplexity Pro in 2025 (Sensor Tower via TechCrunch, 2026).

Perplexity’s India users peaked near 22 million in October 2025 and held around 14 million by mid-2026 as free periods lapsed. The open question for 2026 is whether Indians pay once the free year ends.

The subsidy spike, and what stayed

Find out what AI says about your brand. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, ask what your customers ask, and note which names come back. If yours is missing, that’s the gap to close first. Know more about AI Visibility Audit: What It Is and How to Run One
