A Google Business Profile Moves ChatGPT in India and Almost Nowhere Else

Does your Google business profile affect ChatGPT ranking (retrieval, citation or brand mention)? A 19-city field study of what an AI engine reads when asked for a local agency.

One prompt, nineteen cities, ninety-four agencies, and one pattern that only holds in India.

One prompt, run in nineteen cities, shows where a Google Business Profile moves a ChatGPT answer and where it does nothing. GEO means generative engine optimization: the work of getting AI engines to name you.

We asked “GEO agency [city]” once per city, logged every agency the model named, and coded the source it said it used. Ninety-four agency listings came back across fifteen countries. Three patterns held.

  • The company website is the floor. Nearly every named agency had one cited, so a site earns consideration and nothing more.
  • Business Profile citations are an India pattern. India metros ran at 86 percent. Everywhere else sat at 18 percent, and the other emerging markets fell below the mature-market average.
  • A dedicated GEO page stops the model guessing. Without one, ChatGPT inferred an agency’s positioning 66 percent of the time. With one, it inferred nothing at all.

Why we ran this

Crimson Salt showed up for “GEO agency Bangalore” on ChatGPT before our website launched (the query was first run on 12 July, just out of curiosity). At that point we had a Google Business Profile and little else. That was the whole trigger.

If a listing alone could surface us, we wanted to know whether it was a fluke or a pattern, and how far it reached. So we widened the same question across nineteen cities:

  • Does a Google Business Profile change who gets named?
  • Does that change hold everywhere, or only in some markets?

The answer decides where an agency should spend its effort: on the listing, on the website, or on a page that explains the method.

Research method

Query. The prompt was “GEO agency [city]”, one per city, run in a single ChatGPT session in July 2026. The nineteen cities split into four Indian metros, five other emerging markets, and ten mature markets.

Coding. We tagged each listing for whether ChatGPT cited a Google Business Profile, a company website, a dedicated GEO page, or a third-party directory. We also tagged each one Explicit (the model reported a stated positioning) or Assessment (the model described the GEO relevance as its own read).

Counts. Ninety-four listings across ninety-two unique firms. Geolign surfaced for both New York and San Francisco, and The GEO Agency for both New York and London under different domains.

A caveat, on every line. The source column is not a server log. It is ChatGPT describing its own reasoning after the fact. A language model can name a source it never used, or miss one it did. Read every figure here as self-reported sourcing, not proof of retrieval. The pattern still earns its place. It carries that asterisk, and the limitations section says what would remove it.

Disclosure

Crimson Salt appears in this dataset, surfaced for the Bangalore query. We are naming that openly, because our footprint at the time makes a clean test of the findings.

When the research ran, Crimson Salt had a Google Business Profile and nothing else. No LinkedIn. No other social account. The website was a single page carrying the Crimson Salt logo and one line of text:

AI Visibility & Content Authority Partner. ChatGPT still named the agency and called it an AI SEO and GEO agency, and it drew that from the Business Profile, not the site. The one-line homepage gave the model nothing to read, so it went uncited. Our own listing is Finding 2 and Finding 3 in a single row. The profile alone earned the mention. The missing page left the model with only the listing to describe us from.

Finding 1 · The website is the floor, not the differentiator

Ninety-seven percent of the agencies ChatGPT named had their own website cited. That is close to everyone, so a website buys consideration and little else, because the agency below you has one too. The signal that separates agencies sits in the two sources that were not universal.

What ChatGPT said it used: share of 94 listings, by source type

Company website 97% Google Business Profile 33% Dedicated GEO page 21% Third-party directory 6%

Universal: the company website. Table stakes, not a differentiator.

Selective and decisive: the Business Profile (33%) and the dedicated GEO page (21%). These two decide whether the model retrieves you.

Finding 2 · The Business Profile is an India story

GBP citations cluster almost entirely in Indian metros. Across Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad, 86 percent of surfaced agencies had their Business Profile cited. Everywhere else in the study, that figure fell to 18 percent. Of every GBP citation in the whole dataset, well over half came from four Indian cities out of nineteen.

Emerging, non-India2015%100%5%80%
Mature markets5319%96%32%51%
All listings9433%97%21%52%

The obvious reading is that Business Profiles matter more in emerging markets. They do not. The study held five other emerging markets: Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Nairobi, Manila and Mexico City. Their GBP citation rate was 15 percent, below the mature-market average of 19.

Emerging status is not the variable. India is.

What the Indian agencies are doing

The GEO positioning lives inside the business name and the listing itself. The agencies write the category claim straight into the Business Profile, so ChatGPT reads it there and repeats it back. The listings say things like:

  • “AI SEO & GEO Agency”
  • “GEO, LLM & Maps SEO Agency”
  • “GEO SEO”

It is a shortcut. Rather than build a page that explains a method, you write the claim into the listing and let the model find it. It works, in the narrow sense that ChatGPT surfaces you and calls you a GEO agency.

The shortcut has a ceiling. Only one in ten Indian agencies in the study had a dedicated GEO page. The listing gets them named. It gives the model nothing to say about how they work.

Our own listing, described in the disclosure above, is the barest version of this. A Business Profile, a one-line homepage, no social presence, and it was still enough for the model to name and label us.

Finding 3 · Without a page, the model invents your positioning

We tagged every listing by whether ChatGPT stated a source or admitted it was inferring. In the Indian tables the model was candid, calling a claim an assessment or an interpretation of recent marketing rather than a stated fact. Across the wider set, the same gap showed up whenever an agency had no page for the model to read.

How often ChatGPT inferred the GEO claim: share whose relevance the model guessed

No dedicated GEO page 66% Has a dedicated GEO page 0%

ChatGPT described every agency with a real GEO page from stated fact. It guessed at none. That splits the job in two:

  • A Business Profile can get an AI engine to name you.
  • Only a dedicated page controls what it says about you.

Leave the page out and the model fills the gap with a guess. The guess is not always accurate, and not always kind. ChatGPT gave two agencies in the Indian set capabilities they had never claimed. It read their recent marketing and ran with it.

The two halves differ in strength. The zero is built in: no agency with a dedicated page needed a guess. The 66 percent is softer. It combines two things, the model’s own hedges and the cases where it judged general skill without a GEO source to cite. Read the zero as fact and the 66 as a strong direction.

Where this leaves the Google Business Profile

The Business Profile has a real effect, and a narrow one. In this run it influenced ChatGPT’s answer in a single setting: an Indian market where the agency had written its category claim into the listing. Outside that setting, GBP barely registered as a source, and the answer ran on websites and dedicated pages instead.

London was the one mature market that behaved like India, at 57 percent GBP citation. It is also the mature market where agencies carried both signals at once:

  • Use the listing to declare the category.
  • Use the page to control the description.

Neither one stands in for the other.

City-level results

Sorted by cluster, then by Business Profile citation share. India metros sit at the top. Below them, most cities show little or no GBP citation.

What this means for your GEO agency

  • Write the category into your Business Profile. In plain words. If you do GEO, the listing should say GEO, not “digital marketing”.
  • Do not stop at the listing. Build one page that explains how you work, so the model quotes you instead of guessing.
  • Treat your homepage as a source, not a logo. A one-line site gives an engine nothing to read.
  • Check what ChatGPT says about you today. If the description sounds inferred, that is the gap a page closes.
  • Do not assume the listing carries the same weight outside India. On this evidence, it barely registered elsewhere.

Limitations and what would make it rigorous

This is a single-query probe, and we are naming it as one. It reads as a signal, not a law. Four steps would turn it into something you could stake a strategy on:

  • Repeat each query several times and across sessions. One run cannot separate a real pattern from a lucky draw.
  • Run it on more than one engine. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot retrieve differently, and a Business Profile may weigh differently in each.
  • Verify against exposed citations, rather than trusting the model’s account of itself.
  • Test the mechanism head-on. Take agencies with weak GBP language, strengthen it, hold the website fixed, and measure whether inclusion moves.

A Business Profile moved ChatGPT in one country and sat quiet in the other fourteen. What stopped the model from guessing was never the listing. It was the page.

Data cross-check notes

We coded the dataset directly from the source notes. During cross-checking:

  • Every agency with a dedicated GEO page had a stated source, so the zero-percent figure carries no exceptions.
  • 3DM Agency appeared in the Hyderabad list with no source note, so we excluded it from all counts.
  • Eskimoz (Paris) had a source note cut off in the original document. We coded it from the visible portion, which named a website and a business profile.
  • Geolign and The GEO Agency each surfaced for two city queries. We count both, which is why 94 listings map to 92 firms.
  • Directory citations count Semrush, Clutch, and a Reddit thread that ChatGPT named as where it found three Dubai agencies.
  • Crimson Salt (Bangalore) is the authors’ own agency. At research time it held only a Google Business Profile, no social accounts, and a single-page site showing the logo and the line “AI Visibility & Content Authority Partner.” ChatGPT cited the Business Profile and not the site, so we coded the website 0.
